How do infertility treatments work and how effective are they?

Infertility treatments represent the intersection of science and nature, aimed at assisting when natural conception is challenging. These treatments typically involve facilitating the meeting of the husband’s sperm and the wife’s egg, either within her womb or in a controlled laboratory environment. The techniques and care levels vary, and here we explore the three most common infertility treatments.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Often the first approach in infertility treatment, IUI involves hormone treatment for the wife to stimulate ovulation. Meanwhile, the husband’s semen is processed to separate motile sperms, which are then introduced into the wife’s uterus through a sterile tube. The success rate of IUI generally ranges between 10 to 15%.

In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) In IVF, post hormone treatment and ovulation monitoring via ultrasound, the woman’s egg is extracted and combined with her husband’s sperms in a laboratory setting. This is a widely-used method with success rates varying between 40-50% per cycle.

Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) ICSI is a more technologically advanced procedure where a single sperm is injected directly into the egg. This method is particularly useful in cases of severe male infertility, ensuring that only the healthiest sperm is used for fertilisation.
