Post Pregnancy Pitfalls

Your precious bundle of joy has finally arrived. As much as this is an exciting time of bonding with your new born baby, it can also be distressing to many women due to post pregnancy problems.  Regular visits to your gynaecologist if there is discomfort of any kind will help you feel better and enjoy your time with your baby more.

Common post partum ‘kill joys’ are:

  • Excessive bleeding after delivery,
  • Urinary incontinence,
  • Pelvic organ prolapse,
  • Post pregnancy infections,
  • Infection of C section incision
  • Swollen or infected breasts,
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Postpartum depression

Excessive bleeding post pregnancy

It is caused when the uterus does not contract after the baby and the placenta is delivered. The doctor may massage your uterus to make it contract or you may be given a hormone like oxytocin to help contract it. Tears in your uterus could also cause this bleeding. At Indigo Womens Center we do a blood test to check for infection and if the bleeding does not stop we give blood transfusion and medication to contract the uterus.

Urinary incontinence

The passing of urine without you being able to control it post pregnancy is caused by the stretching and the weakening of pelvic floor muscles. A simple solution for urinary incontinence is the ‘Kegel exercises’, which involves squeezing your buttocks, at IWC our physiotherapists will be able to guide you through the various exercises. Your doctor may also prescribe medicine to help alleviate the problem. Bowel incontinence generally goes away a few months post pregnancy. However it may require surgery if it does not get better with time.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse

If you are experiencing a heavy feeling in your pelvic area post pregnancy this is probably due to pelvic organ prolapse. Again ‘Kegel exercises’ are the way to go. Do let us know if this is a bother , at Indigo Womens Center we perform various sling procedures to pull the uterus back into the pelvis.

Post Pregnancy Infections

Pain or itching while passing urine or when menstruating in the post pregnancy phase maybe because of uterine, kidney or bladder infection. Do not postpone a doctor’s visit if you have such symptoms, as correct and timely medication will help a fast recovery. Do get in touch with us at the earliest if you face such issues.

Infection of C section incision

C section deliveries are as common as normal deliveries these days and sometimes the incision may get infected causing swelling, redness and oozing. Under such circumstance control your urge to scratch. Your doctor will recommend the correct ointment to help it heal.

Swollen or infected breasts

Swollen breasts can be extremely painful to a nursing mother and make the joyful activity of breastfeeding unbearable. Pain can be relieved by wearing good bras, pumping out excess milk and applying an ice pack to your breasts. Breast infection or mastitis can make your breasts tender and red. This can also cause fever and vomiting.  With the correct antibiotic treatment prescribed by your doctor you should recover within a week. Frequent nursing and applying ice packs will help reduce pain. At Indigo Womens Center we have lactation consultants who will provide you with all the necessary information and breast care needed to optimise feeding and avoid lactation issues.

Hemorrhoids are caused due to the weight exerted by the fetus on the lower abdomen veins. The best remedy for this problem is a fiber rich diet. There are ointments that also help reduce this condition.

Postpartum depression

Some women also experience depression(PPD) after the birth of their babies due to hormonal changes. In recent years this problem is hugely acknowledged. This depression is treatable and at Indigo Womens Center we offer you with counselling necessary to overcome PPD. Do get in touch with us as early as possible.
